Quality Forum Duo to Present at Gulf Coast HIMSS Conference

Telehealth Update: Report to Congress on E-Health, Telemedicine

09 16 Telehealth Report on E HealthIn response to a request from the Committees on Appropriations of the U.S. Congress, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a report in August that outlines current telehealth services. In its Report to Congress: E-health and Telemedicine, the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation examined the rapid increase of telehealth modalities when providing medical care and highlights HHS’s efforts to identify and address challenges to e-health and telemedicine. The report highlights ways that advances in telecommunications may support access to care or improve health care quality, effectiveness and outcomes and ways in which delivery system reform may increase the use of e-health and telemedicine.

In Louisiana, Lonnie Dufour, Telehealth Director and Louisiana Telehealth Access Task Force Chair, is currently working with the Human Resources and Services Administration to identify telehealth resources that may aid flood victims in the state with receiving medical and behavioral health care. According to William England, PhD, JD, PE, Director of the Office for the Advancement of Telehealth, these needs are crucial in a post-disaster situation as individuals are exposed to contaminated flood waters and may face extreme stress and/or depression associated with the event. ONC Issues Draft 2017 Interoperability Standards Advisory

09 16 ONC Draft 2017 Interoperability Standards Advisory 2In late August, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) posted a draft of the 2017 Interoperability Standards Advisory (ISA) for public comment. The ISA is the process used by ONC to coordinate the identification, assessment and public awareness of interoperability standards and implementation specifications that can be consistently used by the health IT industry to meet interoperability needs. The draft 2017 ISA is focused on clinical health IT interoperability and incorporates input and feedback from industry stakeholders, the public and the Health IT Standards Committee. Follow-Up: ED Utilization in Louisiana,” authored by CEO Cindy Munn, appeared in the September-October 2016 issues of Healthcare Journal of Baton Rouge (p. 52) and Healthcare Journal of New Orleans (p. 48). The article provides an update about the Louisiana Emergency Department Information Exchange (LaEDIE) and how it supports the efforts of one of the state’s Medicaid managed care companies to decrease primary care utilization in emergency departments.

A Healthcare IT News interview with Quality Forum CEO Cindy Munn and Marketing and Communications Manager Jamie Martin appeared in the Aug. 19 issue. The story highlighted the organization’s direct-to-consumer patient engagement campaign and LaEDIE.
