Privacy & Security

What Are LaHIE's Privacy and Security Requirements?

As outlined in LaHIE's Strategic and Operational Plan, LaHIE will serve as the trusted entity for statewide health information exchange.

As such, it is developing privacy and security policies that address HIPAA privacy and security standards and applicable state privacy and security requirements.  They include, among others, policies regarding administrative, physical and technical security, breach notification and grievance procedures.  Particular attention is being paid to procedures for auditing compliance and consequences for participants who fail to meet LaHIE's stringent privacy and security standards. These policies will also set minimum privacy and security standards for HIE participants as well as prevent unnecessary barriers to exchange.

Finally, LaHIE is helping to develop the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) and will participate in it when it becomes operational, which will facilitate exchange and consistency on an interstate basis.
